The Road Trip

We all met at LAX in the afternoon and rented a minivan for the duration of the trip all the way out to Vegas. Relative to our previous trip, the driving in 2008 would be a piece of cake. We leisurely made our way up into the mountains toward San Bernardino and onward to High Desert, which really is in the middle of nowhere. There are a couple of motels in town, a strip mall, a police station, a local airport and a ballpark. That's about all we saw. Oh yeah, and a place that serves a hot dog topped hamburger called the "Pucky Burger". We didn't see any hospital but there's certainly a cemetery somewhere that's the next stop after eating the Pucky Burger. We stayed at a Days Inn in Adelanto, about 2 miles from the ballpark, the next closest option would have been staying down in San Bernardino.

The Park

This would mark our first endeavour into Minor League Baseball and while we had all certainly been to a minor league game before, we had a "That's it?!?" moment as we first approached the sandlot. With that said, Stater Bros. Stadium was the most hokey of the parks we would attend this year. It's located in Adelanto, CA and there's something just not quite right with this entire place. There must have been some nuclear testing nearby back in the '50s. If we tried to say, "The creepiest thing about this place is...", we would fight for days over the target of the superlative. Suffice it to say there is no lack of creepiness:

  • There is a fireworks stand near the park. There should be no fireworks stand in Adelanto, CA. It was so hot, we were on the verge of the flash point of dry ice. And who would work at such a place?
  • There was an auto detailing place called the Sexy Bean next to the motel. What could possiblty go on at such a place? It looked like it has been defunct for quite some years.
  • We had breakfast at the most sophisticated restaurant in town, a Denny's, there was a midget in there. 'nuff said.
  • There's a roadhouse called the Cocky Bull. Words cannot describe the creepiness.

The Game

There would be no game tonight. If we are ever seen sporting black armbands it is in solemn memory of 7-9-08, the game that just wasn't meant to be. For the gory details, click here.

Awesome car wash place near the hotel called sexy bean

Beer goat guy #19

Mike makes declaration that there is zero chance for rain delay/ posponement on this trip: this game started with a 45 min delay due to "excessive water" in the outfield.

Game cancelled!

They still had the national anthem where some 6 year old sang a wreched version of the anthem. Bill enjoyed it "if she sticks with that she'll be tremendous".

Tried to get a refund and they gave us a hard time. Mike told them we're never going to be back here again b/c we came all the way from CT.

Went to cocky bull since game was cancelled. They have a "bull pucky burger" which is a 1/4 lb burger topped w/ an all beef hot dog. They gave us 20 percent off b/c the game was cancelled.

Asked the waiter where to go since game was cancelled. He pointed out some place near the hilton. Instead went back to the hotel with a 30pk of Bud light and played cards until out of Bud Light
